Background of the study:
Urban migration in Sapele Local Government has significantly affected the transmission of traditional dance forms. As young people move to urban centers in search of better opportunities, the intergenerational transfer of traditional dance and its accompanying rituals is disrupted (Okoro, 2023). Urban lifestyles, with their fast-paced and modernized culture, challenge the retention of indigenous artistic expressions. However, there remains a concerted effort among cultural custodians to revive and adapt these dance forms for modern audiences. Recent studies suggest that while urban migration poses a threat to cultural continuity, it also opens avenues for fusion and innovation in traditional dance (Ezenwa, 2024). This study investigates the degree to which urban migration influences the preservation and evolution of traditional dance, exploring both the challenges and potential adaptive strategies to keep these art forms alive.
Statement of the problem:
The exodus of youth from Sapele due to urban migration has led to diminished transmission of traditional dance forms, risking the loss of an essential cultural heritage. This migration disrupts the traditional learning channels and intergenerational knowledge transfer, necessitating urgent evaluation of its impact on cultural preservation (Okoro, 2023).
Objectives of the study:
To assess the impact of urban migration on traditional dance transmission.
To document changes in dance forms due to urban influences.
To propose strategies for preserving traditional dance among migrating populations.
Research questions:
How does urban migration affect the transmission of traditional dance?
What changes have been observed in the dance forms?
How can traditional dance be preserved amidst urban migration?
Research Hypotheses:
Urban migration negatively impacts the transmission of traditional dance forms.
Modern urban influences lead to significant changes in traditional dance practices.
Community interventions can mitigate the negative effects of migration on cultural transmission.
Significance of the study:
This study provides critical insights into the challenges of cultural preservation in the context of urban migration. Its findings can guide cultural policymakers and community leaders in developing strategies to sustain traditional dance forms in Sapele (Okoro, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to the impact of urban migration on the transmission of traditional dance forms in Sapele Local Government only, excluding other cultural practices or geographic areas.
Definitions of terms:
• Urban Migration: The movement of people from rural to urban areas.
• Traditional Dance Forms: Indigenous dance practices reflecting cultural heritage.
• Cultural Transmission: The process of passing cultural knowledge from one generation to the next.
